Efforts are taken to improve the public transportation services in Iskandar Malaysia.
JOHOR BARU: Public transportation units (UPA) would be set up in four local councils to improve public transport services in Iskandar Malaysia.
Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the units would be set up in the Johor Baru City Council, the Johor Baru Central Municipal Council, the Kulaijaya Municipal Council and the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council.
He said the UPA would also be tasked with responsibilities of addressing the shortcomings in the public transport system at its respective jurisdiction and how to better serve users.
“The units will get feedback from commuters and from there it will disseminate their findings to the relevant authorities on how to improve public transportation in South Johor,” said Mohamed Khaled.
He said this at the opening the 19th annual general meeting of Koperasi Pemandu-Pemandu Teksi Bandaraya Johor Baru Bhd and launching its new fleet of Proton Pesona taxis on Saturday.
Khaled said among agencies that would work closely with the four local councils include the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and the Iskandar Malaysia Public Transport Corporation (PAIM).
“We have to start improving the public transport services in Iskandar Malaysia in tandem with the rapid development taking place in the economic region,” he added.
On a separate matter, Mohamed Khaled urged taxi drivers to improve themselves including learning foreign languages in view of the influx of foreign investors and tourists in South Johor.
He said mastering foreign languages would benefit them in serving passengers as their passengers were not only made up of locals but also foreigners.
In another issue, PAIM chief executive officer Mohd Gadaffie Abd Aziz said an application for taxi services in Iskandar Malaysia is being developed and expected to be ready by August.
He said the application costing RM135,000 would benefit 5,000 taxi drivers in Iskandar Malaysia as users could book taxi services using their smart phones.
“The application will include food and dining and promotions and attractions in Iskandar Malaysia,” he ended.
