THE public thronged the Simee Home for the Aged for their annual Family Day Food Fair recently.
About 40 stalls were set up in the grounds of the home, selling a variety of food ranging from chee cheong fun, wan tan mee, pau, nyonya kuih and other delicacies.
Sally Chan, 45, said attending the fair was “killing two birds with one stone”.
“I can get good food here while doing charity at the same time.
“It is heartwarming to see so many people come together in the name of charity,” the housewife said.
Simee Home for the Aged manager Vincent Lee also applauded the great turnout at the food fair.
“The purpose of the food fair is to raise funds for the home, as we need the money to pay for our residents’ food and other expenditure.
“The number of people here today proved the public’s support for the home,” Lee said.
He also denied rumours that the home is charging its residents for staying there.
“We do not receive any money from the residents as we do not run the home commercially, it is charity-based,” Lee said, adding that the home’s expenses can add up to RM30,000 a month.
“We have a total of 45 residents, who are all over 60 years old.
“We aim to raise RM250,000 from the food fair today, and we have already sold RM60,000 worth of coupons,” he said, adding that planning for the fair had started since late last year.
Gerakan national adviser Datuk Chang Ko Youn launched the food fair.
“I have been working together with Simee Home for the Aged for the past 20 years, since they started their rebuilding programme with the dedication and support from the community.
“I have since then been attending their food fair practically every year, to show support for them in raising funds,” said Chang.
Also present was state Social Welfare Department director Datuk Chong Phaik Kee.
“The department is providing aid for the home on a grant which is given out on a yearly basis.
“Last year, we allocated RM25,000 for the home,” said Chong.
