Dietician shows the many creative ways to serve apples

IT is not easy to get children to eat healthy food, especially fruits and vegetables.

Celebrity mum Sazzy Falak admitted that many mothers were struggling to instil good eating habits in their children.

However, serving fruits such as apples creatively will encourage them to enjoy them.

“I am fortunate my twins love apples. For parents whose children might be picky eaters, I would suggest that they mask the apples in their foods,” said Sazzy.

“You can puree or dice the apples and mix them with other foods they might enjoy.

“Apple makes a great addition to healthier meals. For instance, I always add apple juice instead of sugar to my cooking or substitute sliced apples for chips when I snack.

“Sliced apples dipped in peanut butter makes a great snack for both adults and children,” she added.

During the “Apple of My Eye” event hosted by the Washington Apple Commission recently, dietician Indra Balaratnam claimed that women and mothers in particular might have underestimated the simple goodness and nutritional benefits of consuming apples regularly.

“As a modern woman juggling family and career, we often put our well-being on the back burner.

“We need to be constantly reminded that good nutrition starts with the basics.

“For women constantly on the move and in search of nutritional balance in their day, apples have key nutrients that can positively contribute to their health and well-being,” said Indra.

Moreover, she said research also shows that overweight women who eat three servings of apples a day as part of a low calorie diet can help them to achieve their weight loss goal more effectively.

Apples contain fibre, potassium, vitamins A and C as well as antioxidants that are heart healthy nutrients.

On top of that, apples can be easily found anywhere and are affordable for everyone.

According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, increasing consumption of apples may prevent coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease.

The event included live demonstrations on how to make a healthy apple salad, fruit and nuts snack, and apple raisin smoothie.
