Fashion lovers nationwide have an opportunity to meet Jimmy Choo and be charitable at the same time, at a fashion charity high-tea to be held on March 8.

Organised with the support of Malaysia-based shoe and handbag designer Fion Poon, the event is aimed at raising funds for Selangor Cheshire Homes in conjunction with the charity’s 50th anniversary.

Poon, who trained with Choo and has worked as a designer for over 20 years, has a long history with the charity, although this is the first time her name will exclusively grace the name of a fundraising event.

Poon has enlisted the support of her old friend and global shoe designing icon Choo, who will fly from London specifically to attend the event.

“Jimmy is an old friend of mine and he is eager to support this charity. He is even flying back specially to attend the high-tea,” said Poon.

Guests will dine at the Fukuden Japanese Restaurant. There will be a fashion show and live entertainment.

Among others attending are local celebrities, all keen to show their support, said Anne Lourdes of Nextdor Communications, who is a personal sponsor of the event.

“This is an exclusive and intimate event featuring the works of one of Malaysia’s best loved designers, so there will be many important people in attendance, not only our guest-of- honour Jimmy Choo,” Lourdes said.

Selangor Cheshire Homes has provided residential care for people with physical and mental disabilities since 1963.

“The home is always in need of more funding as they rely entirely on donations and as they were hit by a flashflood over the Christmas period, the donations are needed more than ever,” she said.

For this reason, the event is running entirely on corporate sponsorship and the efforts of business owners such as Poon, who is donating a huge collection of custom-made shoes and handbags to be sold on the night.

“I make all my products by hand, using traditional batik and songket techniques — each item is made personally” said Poon, whose designs are purchased by international customers and have been worn by members of the Malaysian royal family.

Poon created a custom black satchel for her mentor Choo, which he has been photographed wearing on a regular basis.

“Having Fion’s name on the event gives us a lot of mileage. She is a big name in the fashion industry, both locally and internationally,” said Lourdes.

The corporate sponsors of the event hope the combination of Poon and Choo’s involvement will help raise much-needed funds to help the residents of the Selangor Cheshire Home. There is an exclusive sale of 150 tickets to the Fion Poon Fashion Gala available at RM250. To reserve your place, call Datuk Khatijah (019-331 6409) .
