LOCAL fashion designer, Hideaki Lim, has taken the traditional cheongsam to another level with his futuristic designs.
At a recent media preview of Hideaki Lim’s 2014 Organic Cyber Horse Cheongsam Collection at Hotel Royal Kuala Lumpur, Lim showcased his modern take on the popular age-old attire.
His latest creations consist of three separate designs, with the first collection encompassing organic fabric imported from India, which also utilises organic colours.
His second set includes the cyber cheongsam, which incorporates a modern twist to the design while his third set sees a horse element illustrated on the cheongsam.
The first set of his cheongsam comes in blue and green. They are reversible, allowing wearers to have one outfit with two colours.
“As a designer, I try to convey my message to the public that everyone can contribute something to Mother Nature.”
He also designed his cheongsam with the aim of making his fashion-wear affordable to the public.
Four celebrities, including Winnie K, Tiffany Hew, Carol Lee and Chelsea Chil, were present to model his designs.
Lim, a winner of The International Designer Award for Fashion Beyond 2000 in 1998, described his collection as “wearable but daring”.
Having been in the fashion scene for 23 years, he explained that it was important for designers to create pieces that were unique and in line with the market trend.
“If the fabric goes through technology, it becomes part of the cyber collection.
“There is a need to continue being ahead of time in cutting and fabric use,” he said.
“Organic fabric needs a lot of effort and technology to produce,” explained Lim, adding that the organic colours used for his collection were made from fruits and vegetables.
He believes that Malaysians are becoming more open to the different types of fashion available.
Lim’s fashion showcase was followed by a “lou sang” session with sponsors of the event, media representatives and the celebrity models.
