IF you are thinking of doing something loving and meaningful this Christmas season, then you should perhaps pay a visit to the United Voice booth at the 1 Utama shopping complex at Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya.

The 1 Utama management has selected the United Voice, a self-advocacy society of persons with learning disabilities, to be its charity partner for the Christmas sales period that is on from now till Jan 2.

The United Voice has been given a booth at the 1 Utama community corner on the first floor of High Street in the new wing.

Shoppers can buy beautifully handcrafted items as Christmas presents for their family members and friends from the United Voice booth and, in the process, do something to support the disabled.

The United Voice sells handmade products of the United Voice Employment Project (EP) team, such as greeting cards, bookmarks, ornamental magnets and Saori products. Examples of Saori items are intricately woven pins, pencil cases, scarves, coasters, magnets and dolls.

The United Voice publication “Our Journey”, a compilation of life stories of disabled persons, is also available at the stall. Buy a copy and learn how fortunate and blessed you are, compared to these disabled but brave persons. Your children, too, can learn a lesson or two by reading this heart-warming book.

Besides the EP products, the booth also sells products made by volunteers in aid of the United Voice building fund. Items like Christmas fruitcakes, an assortment of cookies, hand woven baskets and Christmas ornaments are available.

The United Voice will also conduct a Crafty Creations charity workshop where the public can see demonstrations of Saori weaving and try their hand at it too. They can also see artists at work, and get a chance to make a greeting card or bookmark together with members from the United Voice members.

There is also an information corner for those who want to learn more on learning disabilities or need to seek advice on the matter.

All these activities and a goodies bag will be made available to shoppers for a minimum donation of RM10 per person.

The Crafty Creations charity workshop will be held this Saturday from 1.30pm to 4pm at LG Floor, the Oval, 1 Utama.
