When a spectacular fire broke out on the 43rd floor of Komtar in 1983, the author set up his ‘operation base’ in a shop in Penang Road to report on the incident.

BACK in the 1990s, The Star was the first media organisation in Penang to use the bulky Atur communication set, considered the first-generation mobile phone.

The gadget, with very high frequency, used two-way radio communications. It was a unique experience using this “cordless wonder”.
