Calling former Sportsboys and Sportsgirls

By Y.P. SIVAM

PAST recipients of the Malaysian Schools Sports Council’s (MSSM) Sportsboy and Sportsgirl awards are invited to attend MSSM’s 50th anniversary celebration in Putrajaya on July 31.

The MSSM celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and the Education Ministry’s Sports and Physical Education Department would like all past recipients to be part of the celebrations.

“We would like them to be the special guests at this year's ceremony,” said the department’s deputy director Mohamed Zarra-wi Abdullah.

“Many of the award recipients have gone on to represent the country in many international competitions. They have also done well in their respective careers. Their presence at this year’s ceremony will make the event a merrier one.

“It will also be an opportunity for the past winners to meet their counterparts as well as share their experiences with the young recipients,” said Mohamed Zarra-wi.

The MSSM had initiated several programmes in conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebrations.

In April, it organised eight carnivals involving athletics, badminton, squash, bowling, sepak takraw, netball, football and hockey in the Klang Valley.

Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya were given the responsibility to organise the carnivals.

Selangor organised the athle-tics, badminton, squash and bowling carnival; KL was in charge of football and hockey while Putrajaya hosted the sepak takraw and netball carnivals. Putrajaya had also organised the cross country in March.

The MSSM introduced the Sportsboy and Sportsgirl awards in 1969. The inaugural recipients were badminton player Tan Aik Mong and swimmer Ong Mei Lin. Both were from Penang.

Swimmer May Tan received the Sportsgirl award for six conse-cutive years from 1982 to 1987.

Three athletes in the Malaysian contingent for the Beijing Olympics had also received the Sportsboy awards. They are swimmer Daniel Bego, diver Bryan Nickson Lomas and high jumper Lee Hup Wei.

Mohamed Zarrawi said MSSM was keen to get in touch with the past recipients to confirm their attendance at the ceremony.
