Kai Way showing off his skating skills after a press conference to announce the upcoming 4th Penang Open Freestyle Skating Asean Championship 2017 in Komtar.
SKATERS from 13 countries will be competing in the 4th Penang Open Freestyle Skating Asean Championship 2017 at the Penang Youth and Sports Complex in Gelugor.
Penang Roller Sport Association and Freestyle Inline Skate Club president Lim Thong Soon said about 120 participants have signed up in various categories for the event from May 31 to June 3.
“They will compete in speed slalom, classic slalom, slide slalom, battle slalom, pair slalom and roller cross.
“The competition rules are based on the World Slalom Skaters Association (WSSA) world standard freestyle skating competition and the results will be submitted for world ranking,” he told a press conference in Komtar on Tuesday.
Thong Soon noted that the participating countries this year are Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, India, Laos, the Philippines, Arab Saudi and China.
“Skating workshops will also be conducted for the participants on May 31 by renowned skaters Yu Jin Seong from South Korea and Huang Hai Yang from China.
“The public can also attend skating workshops by our association on the same day,” he said.
State Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Chong Eng encouraged Penangites to grab the opportunity to engage in the sport.
“The Penang government has always encouraged healthy living and youth and sport development,” she said.
After the press conference, event organising chairman Lim Kai Way showcased some freestyle skating skills to the media.
The fee for the competition is RM150 per person.
Admission to watch the competition is free.
