YOUNG cagers will be vying for court supremacy at the Spalding 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge this Sunday, for what is the biggest gathering of youth teams in the Klang Valley.
An estimated 300 teams will take part in the competition that was formerly known as the AND1 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge which has moved in line with developing the sport further.
According to the organisers W.O.S. World of Sports (M) Sdn Bhd, the reason for the change was to shift the focus to younger players with the abolishment of categories for players aged 18 years and above.
Organising chairman Saw See Leong said preparations to host the 300 teams at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur have been going smoothly.
“We have been organising these tournaments for 12 years now so we have become quite familiar with handling the crowd,” Saw said
“This year we are more focused on growing the sport among the youth and we are happy that despite the lack of older players, we have managed to get the same number of teams made up of younger players,” he added.
Tournament director Wong Wing Wai said events like the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) sanctioned Spalding three-on-three basketball challenge can expose youths to more competition experience.
“With a lack of basketball events like the previous Petronas-MABA 3-on-3 Basketball Competition, this is one of the last ones remaining.
“Twelve years on, it is good to see the chidren are still coming in droves,” he said.
This year’s grand final will feature Boys Under-12, Under-15, Under-18 and a Girls Under-18 categories and the top four winners in each category will take home Hoops Station vouchers worth RM900, RM600, RM300 and RM150 respectively.
While the main three-on-three event has always attracted avid basketballers to pit their skills in the competition, participants can stand out from the sea of players by demonstrating their shooting and slam-dunk skills in.
The one-day event will also feature the best shooter challenge and the crowd-pleasing StarMetro slam-dunk exhibition, as well as a three-in-one skill challenge where the youngsters will be challenged to dribble, pass and layup in the shortest time on a pre-determined course.
By scoring the most baskets in a given time or pulling off the most outrageous slam-dunk, Milo hampers and the StarMetro Slam Dunk Trophy await the winners of the supporting categories.
The previous legs of the Spalding 3x3 Challenge were held in IOI Mall, Puchong, Queensbay Mall, Penang and Sutera Mall in Skudai, Johor.
StarMetro is the official media partner of the Spalding 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge while Milo is the official beverage sponsor and Spalding as the official ball partner.
