FROM the start of the Ta’ziyeh (passion play) in Persia centuries ago, boria surfaced in the Straits of Malacca in Penang through the pathways of India where staging of the Ta’ziyeh was popular.
National Heritage Department director-general Datuk Dr Zainah Ibrahim said in the Straits of Malacca, it assimilated with the political and socio-cultural history of the Jawi Peranakans and Malays in Penang.
