DAP sets up bureau for free legal advice in Kepong

FREE legal consultation service is now available in Kepong with the establishment of the Kuala Lumpur DAP Public Complaints Bureau.

Kuala Lumpur DAP secretary Lim Lip Eng, who is also the Kepong MP, said a pool of lawyers would be available for consultation every first and last Saturday of the month, from 10am to 1pm.

“Response on the first day today has been overwhelming. People have been queuing to talk to us.

“A lot of the complaints have been about issues with their neighbours and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

“The most heartbreaking case was a mother who complained that her 25-year-old mentally challenged daughter had been repeatedly raped by her neighbour.

“When the mother found out and lodged a police report, the police said there was no case as the parties involved were adults, and that since it happened many times, it was consensual.

“The mother couldn't prove that her daughter was mentally challenged as she did not have a disabled person’s (OKU) card.

“The mother has since got an OKU card for her daughter and hopes to get justice,” he said.

Senior lawyer K.A. Ramu said they would help the mother take up the case, as being forced or threatened to have sex is also considered rape.

Ramu said they had a similar programme in Petaling Jaya last week and over 60 people turned up for free consultation.

“The cost of living is high, and people need the  service,” he said.

Another lawyer Chia Huei Min said they also wanted to prevent people from blindly engaging lawyers.

“We will listen to their problems, look at the documents and advise them if it's worth it to take up a case.

"We can also recommend lawyers with reasonable rates, if needed,” she said.

Kuala Lumpur DAP assistant organising secretary Yew Jia Haur said Lim, a lawyer himself, had been providing free legal advice for the last 10 years when he was Segambut MP.

“Now that DAP is part of the government, the expectation of our services has increased.

“Many people are coming with complaints and seeking legal advice. So, we decided to expand our services.

"We even had a person coming from Kedah (to seek advice).

“I hope other state representatives will also provide such services,” Yew said.
