Chong Wei visits MCA Selayang pal, stirs fan excitement

Keeping it low profile? No way, when it comes to Chong Wei.

THE bustling market in the heart of Rawang came to a standstill when several traders spotted Datuk Lee Chong Wei making his way through a busy row of stalls.

The badminton star was making a surprise visit to the quiet town to meet his close friend Kang Meng Huat, the Selayang MP candidate.

As he alighted from his vehicle at the market where Kang was waiting to take him to breakfast, he was quickly spotted by traders and shoppers.

People started screaming his name from afar. Others rushed out to catch a glimpse of Lee as his name echoed through the multi-storey building.

The duo took a short walk to a coffee shop nearby for a light meal, but were quickly swarmed by Lee’s fans who came rushing with their camera phones.

Despite the buzz at the restaurant, Lee spent close to an hour catching up with Kang over kaya toasts and two glasses of warm barley.

He also took time to greet fans and pose for photographs before leaving.

Kang said he was delighted to have Lee visiting the constituency despite his busy schedule.

“He is a good friend, and I'm very happy that he came all the way here just to show me moral support,” said Kang who wanted to keep the visit low-profile.

That was why he did not organise any event or notified the public about Lee’s visit.

He gave Lee his best wishes for the Thomas Cup competition to be held in Bangkok, Thailand at end of the month.

“My promise to him if elected as an MP is to promote badminton strongly in Selayang and perhaps produce a world champion from Selayang,” he said.
