RAUB: Despite complaints on air pollution for some time now, residents in Kampung Sempalit in Raub, Pahang, do not see any improvements.
MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said they were worried about the thick layer of sawdust covering their vehicles and house compounds, which they suspected was from the sawdust factories nearby.
“They claimed the non-stop operations at the factories also disturbed their sleep,” she said.
Chew visited one of the factories with Raub MCA public complaints committee head Ng Leap Pong and Kampung Sempalit villager Yap Koon Fah.
They were informed that the Department of Environment (DoE) officers would carry out inspections on the factory from time to time, and that facilities have been upgraded based on the department’s instructions.
Chew said they also noticed a smaller sawdust factory next door during their visit.
“I wrote to the state department several months ago, requesting for a joint inspection but was told that action had been taken.
“I will lodge another complaint with the department through an MCA district councillor,” she said.
Chew hoped the problem could be solved soon and that the factories adhere to environmental standards.
“The operation hours should not disturb the residents and they must not pollute the environment, ” she said, adding that both factories had the necessary permits to operate.
