Miri Agriculture Department says the land here is suitable for planting Musang King durian trees.
MIRI: Miri has been earmarked as the main farming and production centre for the highest quality durian, the Musang King.
The state Agriculture Department is looking into creating a special zone in Miri to mass produce this type of durian for local and export markets.
Miri Division Agriculture Department officer Jackson Nanta said the Musang King durian could fetch up to RM60 per kg locally.
Speaking at an agriculture talk here, he said overseas market for Musang King was even more lucrative.
“Land in Miri is fertile and suitable for planting Musang King in big quantity.
“Our department plans to start a Musang King plantation on a 10ha land in Miri soon.
“We want Miri to be the Musang King production hub for Sarawak.
“Given the current market prices of this type of durian, growers of Musang King will get very good income,” he said.
Nanta said that stingless bee (kelulut) honey was another big potential product for Miri.
Stingless bee farmers who attended the talk were told to improve their harvesting skills and techniques.
“The kelulut honey can become a key commercial product in rural areas, Nanta said.
He said many villagers produced kelulut honey in their backyard.
“This honey has a high commercial value if it is produced in bulk and marketed professionally.
“We will work with the villagers to help develop this product commercially,” he added.
