PENANG Fire and Rescue Department saved property worth RM1bil up to July this year.
However, its director Saadon Moktar said RM221.9mil worth of property was destroyed during the same period of time from January to July this year.
“We managed to save 18 people from fire till July this year.
“However, there were two casualties and 22 injured,” he said after opening the department’s gathering in conjunction with the 60th Merdeka Day celebration at the Prai fire station in Butterworth, on Wednesday.
Saadon said they received 3,606 calls during the first seven months of the year, of which 52 of them were hoaxes.
He said 1,270 calls were fire related, while the rest were for rescue and special services.
Saadon said they also conducted fire hazard inspections on 445 premises, before issuing 74 warning notices to the owners for various offences.
Most of them were illegal modification of shoplots that did not comply with the law.
“This year, we have issued 12 compounds and opened 23 investigations papers,” he said.
