Preservation beyond protected zones


Sabah’s pledge to fully certify its palm oil offers hope for the preservation of orang utan in Lower Kinabatangan and elsewhere in Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s move towards jurisdictional oil palm certification will be further boosted if preservation includes High Conservation Value areas outside the protected areas in the Kinabatangan region.

Some 23,000ha of orang utan and other wildlife-rich areas within private and alienated lands in Kinabatangan should be earmarked for preservation under private agreements, Living Landscape Alliance founder and co-director Dr Nicola K. Abram said.
