DUNGUN: The Terengganu government and the Fisheries Development Board Malaysia (LKIM) will build three new housing areas for fishermen in the state to ensure they own comfortable homes.
State Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry, Plantation Industries and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Pehimi Yusof said the cost of the fishermen’s special housing project (relocation) is estimated at RM31mil.
“Of the total cost, the state government is expected to spend RM18mil while the remaining RM13mil will be borne by the Federal Government.
“The locations are Pulau Sekepeng, Kemaman with 72 units and Seberang Penarik, Setiu and Beting Lentang, Besut, with each having 64 units,” he said after placing artificial reefs in the waters off Dungun here.
Also present were Terengganu Fisheries Department director Zawawi Ali and Dungun Parliamentary Constituency Development Officer Datuk Din Adam.
Muhammad Pehimi said priority would be given to fishermen who did not own their own houses yet.
“Besides housing, the LKIM will help the fishermen to improve their socio-economic status through downstream industries such as the production of fish crackers.
“The planned housing project for fishermen is proof of the government's concern for their welfare,” he added. - Bernama
