KUANTAN: The International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) has plans to expand its services and facilities at its Medical Specialist Centre (IMSC) in three to five years time.

IMSC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman said this was the next step, upon breaking even with the RM10mil cost that had been invested to set up the specialist centre.

Abdul Aziz said there were currently 92 medical consultants with their own sub-specialty serving both IMSC and IIUM Medical Centre (IMC) at the campus here.

“We want to further expand the facilities, manpower and experts.

“We have a plot of land nearby which we intend to use but the details are still in the planning stage,” said Abdul Aziz during the IMSC Hari Raya open house.

He added that the specialist centre had six daycare units and 79 wards while the medical centre has 88 daycare centres and 350 wards.

“We are the first medical centre in the country which is Syariah compliant and this is attractive not just to Malaysians and Indonesians, but to the Muslim world,” he said.

Abdul Aziz added that state-of-the-art medical facilities were also provided, especially in the areas of ophthalmology, orthopedics and fertility.

He said its fertility centre was the first in the east coast and was the second public university to run full in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) services.

He said the fertility centre had successfully delivered more than 1,600 babies so far.

During the open house, IMSC handed over a RM2,000 contribution to the Permata Camar Nadwah orphanage and gift baskets to those who became parents after receiving treatment at its fertility centre.
