THE Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) Ladies Chorus did Malaysia proud by winning the Gold IV award in the 5th Vietnam International Choir Competition.

Their presentation of four songs, namely Dusun Humour, Antagata Doko sa, Ave Maria and Cantate Domino, won them the highest gold award in the Female Choirs category.

The gold award consists of four levels (Gold I to Gold IV) with Gold IV being the highest level.

Following their win in the Female Choirs category, all 32 members of the MIA Ladies Chorus will be in the finals to compete for the grand prize.

They were the only representatives from Malaysia at the grand prize competition on June 11.

They were once again led by veteran choir conductor, Susanna Saw, who steered the group to victory two years ago in the 4th Vietnam International Choir Competition held in Hoi An, Vietnam.

The MIA Ladies Chorus was one of the groups to represent Malaysia in the prestigious choral contest participated by 32 choirs from 10 nations (Malaysia, Australia, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, Russia, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam).

The MIA Ladies Chorus was established in 2004 and has since accumulated a long list of achievements.

Its members have been invited to participate and perform in various international choral competitions and festivals.

The praiseworthy performance of the MIA Ladies Chorus also won them the Gold Award for the Female Chamber category in the 4th Vietnam International Choir Competition in 2015.

This was the second win for the team after its first success at the 2nd Vietnam International Choir Competition in 2012.

The team was also invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the event, which was broadcasted live throughout Vietnam.

In December 2013, the MIA Ladies Chorus won the Best Folk Award in the 3rd International Baguio International Music Festival held in the Philippines.

The MIA Ladies Chorus also secured the Gold Award and the championship for the Youth Equal Voices category at the 10th Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod 2012 in Ipoh.

Their most memorable moment was when they won the coveted World Championship and the Gold Award in the 6th World Choir Games Competition in the Female Voice category representing Malaysia in July 2010 at Shaoxing, China.

The Ladies Chorus was also invited to perform in Brisbane, Australia at the International Kodaly Symposium in July 2011 and once again in January 2014.

This year, the 5th Vietnam International Choir Competition was held in Hoi An, Vietnam from June 7 to 11.

The competition is organised biannually by Interkultur, the world’s leading organiser of international choir competitions and festivals since 2011.

Interkultur has a musical network of approximately 120,000 choirs with 4.8 million singers.

The organisation aims to provide an outstanding presentation of choral singing by participants from different countries and cultural regions which will greatly highlight their variety of styles and customs.

According to Interkultur’s world rankings which was last updated in February 2017, MIA Ladies Chorus currently ranks 481st in the World Top 1,000 Choir category and 46th in the Female Choirs category.

This year, the MIA Ladies Chorus once again attained an outstanding achievement on the international stage.
