“YOUTH are the nation’s future,” says Ng Kok Heng, group CEO of XOX Bhd.
That’s why the company continually creates and supports programmes and activities that benefit young people, he explains.
And that’s why the company is stoked that its mobile virtual network operator, XOX Mobile, is partnering with Star Media Group to support Malaysia’s most prestigious cheerleading competition, CHEER.
This year’s edition, CHEER 2017, was launched recently at Space@XOX, Sunway Pyramid, Selangor, by Ng and Star Media Group group CEO Calvin Kan.
XOX Mobile and its prepaid brand, ONEMUSIC, is the event’s official partner.
At the launch, Ng said XOX came in as a sponsor because cheerleading promotes a healthy lifestyle with its focus on fitness, coordination, flexibility, and improved confidence among young participants, “and most importantly, team building”.
“XOX Mobile seeks to promote an active lifestyle for our youth. By being part of CHEER 2017, we believe that we can contribute and share our entrepreneurial spirit, while the cheerleading competition teaches youth to embrace challenges by having the right attitude and skill set to adapt to changes,” he says.
This is not the company’s first foray into sports, though, as XOX Mobile has been widely involved in the Malaysian sports community, notably in badminton and football; it was also a sponsor of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship.
Another area of engagement with youth that the company is involved in is music – besides sports, Malaysian youth are most into the music scene, it seems.
Which is why XOX Mobile partnered with music label Universal Music Malaysia earlier this year to launch ONEMUSIC, a multichannel plan that offers subscribers unparalleled access to music showcases.

For CHEER 2017, XOX Mobile has lots of goodies in store for cheerleaders and fans alike, Ng says.
It has launched the new Season Pass FAT 5GB and FAT 10GB, which gives users 5GB and 10GB of data respectively. For new subscribers, there are additional goodies, with an instant free 10GB data upon purchase of the Season Pass FAT 10GB package or instant free 5GB data upon the purchase of Season Pass FAT 5GB package.

Competition details
CHEER 2017 is open to all secondary and tertiary education institutions nationwide. Each school can submit a maximum of three entries – one team per category, or two teams in the same category. Tertiary institutions can enter three teams in their category.
The categories are: High School Junior All-Girl, High School Senior All-Girl, High School Senior Co-Ed (with All-Boys and Mixed Teams), and University Co-Ed Elite.
Each team can have a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 16 people.
Contestants have to perform a three-minute routine.
The grand final will be held at the Main Atrium, Tropicana City Mall, Petaling Jaya, on Aug 19, 10am to 6pm.
