Marine police found 9,400 contraband cigarettes worth RM94,752 in a car at Kuala Sedili in Kota Tinggi.
KOTA TINGGI: Marine police have uncovered almost 10,000 contraband cigarettes in an abandoned car near Padang Lima at Kuala Sedili here.
Southern Region 2 commander Asst Comm Paul Khiu Khon Chiang said his men made the discovery after following a vehicle at around 11pm on April 19.
He added that while trailing the vehicle, , the car suddenly stopped at the roadside and the driver escaped on foot into the jungle.
“We found a total of 9,400 boxes of contraband cigarettes worth RM94,752 in the vehicle,” he added.
ACP Khiu added that the vehicle as well as the goods found within were being detained for further investigations.
The case, he said was being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.
“Those found guilty can be fined not more than 10 times of the item’s value, and the maximum of not more than 20 times of its value or jailed not more than three years or both,” he said.
