After the storm, Sg Kuang bridge operational again

Traffic was at a standstill at the bridge after floodwater damaged the bridge on Sunday.

TRAFFIC flow has returned to normal on the old bridge along Jalan Kampung Baru Kundang after last Sunday's flash flood damaged the bridge and brought vehicles to a standstill.

The bridge over Sungai Kuang, believed to be more than 50 years old, frequently overflows its banks and inundate neighouring villages whenever there is a heavy downpour.

Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Agro-Based Industry Committee chairman Zaidy Abdul Talib said water rose from 0.3m to 1.2m on Sunday evening following heavy rain. This caused damage to the bridge and affected some 400 people at the 30 units of shoplots and houses nearby.

Among those who had to use alternative routes to get around were the residents of Kg Melayu Sri Kundang, Bandar Baru Kundang, Kg Damai, Lorong Melur Tambahan, Lorong Ros, Kg Cempedak, Ladang Baru, Taman Rahmat Jaya Phase 4, Kg Melayu Sg Buloh, Kg Gombak, Kg Setia and Kg Bunga Raya.

“However, the Gombak District Public Works Department (PWD) was efficient and bridge has been repaired with a period of 15 hours as of 4am on Tuesday morning..

“The bridge has been opened to traffic, and it's safe for motorists, including heavy vehicles," Zaidy announced.

He said PWD inspected the bridge for damage and found that the structure was still strong. They reported that the area that was affected was the bridge connection, and this was quickly repaired.

“Although, the repair work was supposed to take a week, it was completed within a short period so as not to  inconvenience residents and motorists," said Zaidy.

He added that a long-term solution for the flood problem had already been set in motion with Phase One of the Sungai Kuang/Kundang mitigation plan area being done.

"The tender was issued on April 10 this year," Zaidy said.
