KHOO Ka Leong’s creativity in expressing his love for Penang through poster colour painting paid off when he won a special prize in Gerakan’s “Love Penang Save Penang” logo design competition.
The 18-year-old student from SMJK Phor Tay said his logo design depicted the hopes of Penangites.
“In my logo design, I painted three individuals – a Malay, Chinese and Indian – to represent the three major races in Malaysia.
“There is also a building painted behind them to symbolise Penangites’ hope to have affordable housing in the state.
“Green colour is painted around the picture in the logo to also symbolise Penangites’ hope for the state’s environment to be preserved,” said the Form Five student after the prize presentation ceremony at the state Gerakan headquarters in Macalister Road.
Ka Leong took home RM100 and a trophy for winning the special prize.
Penang Gerakan vice-chairman Oh Tong Keong said Ka Leong managed to highlight some of the issues in Penang through his logo design.
“Besides the top three and consolation prizes, the party also wanted to give a special prize to Ka Leong for his support.
“This is because even though he is not good in using computer, he was determined to express his love for Penang through his paintings,” he said.
It was reported that the competition was to raise awareness about the issues in Penang.
Participants were required to include the words of the theme in their logo in either English, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese or Tamil.
The logo must also touch on one or more of the key issues in Penang such as deforestation, floods, loss of heritage sites, loss of foreign investments, no low medium-cost houses, traffic congestion, land reclamation and water tariff rise.
Oh said 517 entries were received between Feb 17 and March 2.
First prize winner Cheah Lay Cheng, 37, and third prize winner Foo Zhi Jiunn, 21, were not present to receive their prizes at the presentation ceremony.
Cheah won RM2,500 and a trophy while Foo won RM1,500 and a trophy.
Meanwhile, second prize winner Soon Cai Ling, 23, said she took a week to come up with the logo design and completed it using her computer for the competition.
She took home RM2,000 and a trophy for winning the second prize.
Also given out were seven consolation prizes, each comprising RM100 and a trophy.
