SEVENTY-SIX Chinese primary schools in Penang have received RM2.87mil in special allocations from the Federal Government for maintenance and upgrading.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon handed out the funds to representatives of the schools at a ceremony in SJK (C) Shang Wu in Air Itam recently.

Chong hoped that the schools would carry out the required maintenance and upgrading works soon.

“We hope to receive in about three months reports from all the schools on the works carried out,” said Chong.

“If all the reports are done by June this year, we can take in fresh applications from schools for another round of special allocations to be disbursed by year-end.”

Chong, who is also national MCA Youth chief, said Chinese primary schools in Penang had received special allocations totalling RM20.895mil from the Federal Government from 2011 to 2016.

Also present at the handover of funds were Penang MCA chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng and other MCA leaders.
