THE 9.38ha of mangrove trees in Bagan Jermal which were removed have been transplanted in Sungai Acheh on the mainland.
Penang Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the developer of the project in the area transplanted the trees after obtaining approval from the state Environment Department.
Phee said in a statement yesterday that he was upset with press reports which said he had issued a statement saying that the mangrove trees were removed to allow development in Bagan Jermal.
“It’s totally untrue that I or the state government made such a statement, which was reported by the local media,” he said.
A local daily reported on Wednesday that the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) regretted that the state allowed the destruction of the mangrove swamps in the name of development.
