A book dedicated to the Penans

Can the future generations of Penan continue the way of life practised by their ancestors? Not if encroaching development and illegal logging are left unchecked.

When you have been a deputy minister, the role tends to stick. No matter if Datuk Hon Choon Kim, a former deputy education minister, had retired from politics eight years ago. No matter that the 68-year-old is now more caught up with looking through the lenses of his Canon 5D Mark III than the current newspaper headlines. The public still sees Hon as a politician. Not a photographer.

So during his exhibition at the Blossom Art Festival in Wisma MCA, he is peppered with questions on what is to be done with the Penan. What sort of future awaits them? How is the government planning to help Penan children get an education? What is to be done about their livelihood and the encroaching development that will destroy their way of life?
