THE Bukit Gasing Gerakan and 1Malaysia Hawkers and Petty Traders Foundation Unit (YPPKM) joined forces in a cleaning campaign at Pasar Besar Jalan Othman in Petaling Jaya.
Gerakan Bukit Gasing coordinator Chai Ko Thing said they wanted to promote cleanliness.
“The public’s perception is that the market is dirty and not properly maintained making it appear unattractive to locals,” said Chai.
Among the campaign highlights was the distribution of caps and aprons to hawkers.
Waste separation bins were also distributed to inculcate the recycling habit.
Gerakan youth secretary general William Chang Yoong said the market’s dirty condition was a bane to residents living nearby.
“They are always faced with smell coming from the rubbish and drains, and also have to put up with rodents infesting the area,” he said.
He also urged the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to take proper measures to improve the market.
“The local authority needs to take these issues seriously by doing proper maintenance and regular cleaning.
“This is to ensure that the hawkers’ welfare is cared. A clean market will make residents happy to go there,” said Chang, adding that tackling the problem of rats should be top priority for MBPJ.
