ABOUT 34 couples dressed in full bridal regalia took part in the Shark Savers Couple Challenge, to save sharks.
This challenge was part of the awareness campaign “I’m Finished with Fins”, organised by WildAid Shark Savers Malaysia in collaboration with wedding portal Wedding.com.my to encourage Malaysians to swear off shark’s fin soup consumption.
Shark finning is an ugly affair and it is common for Malaysian Chinese weddings to serve shark’s fin soup. The campaign’s aim was to change this social norm.
“Thank you to every participant of the Shark Savers Couples Challenge for helping to spread awareness and save sharks,” said Wedding.com.my Regional Sales and Marketing director Stacey Lee.
Chauffeured by 40 MyTeksi bridal taxis — one of which was a shark car — couples started their journey at the One City shopping mall in Subang Jaya, and then made their way to Aquaria KLCC, IOI City Mall in Putrajaya and Seri Kembangan’s Farm In The City, where they were given a number of challenges.
The men were called out for the first challenge at the starting point and were each given a piece of paper containing questions about their partners such as their favourite food and song, among others.
Several of the participants groaned when they saw what they had to do and began pacing the room wracking their brains for the answers.
The challenge heightened at IOI City Mall’s Poh Kong store, where contestants had to compose a song in which they had to include the words Poh Kong, Wedding.com.my and Shark Savers.
Six teams who successfully completed the Poh Kong challenge walked away with RM1,000 worth of Poh Kong jewellery.
Winners of the overall challenge received a Poh Kong voucher worth RM5,000, 10 pairs of buffet lunch dining vouchers at Sky 360 Restaurant at eCity Hotel and one-month free membership plus two personal training sessions at e-Fitness One City.
The challenge concluded at the starting point in One City where the champions Wong Chin Hee and Cherry Eng Koj Gek from team Wong & Cherry were crowned, taking home the grand prize and glory.
First and second runners-up were George Lim Hau Hsie and Melissa Loh Ping Yong from team Silly Fish and Wong Tai Kaey and Ling Boon Yen from team Saltfish Cabbage, respectively.
Wedding.com.my, Shark Savers and MyTeksi also made history, setting a new record for the Most Number of “Taxi” Bridal Cars, for their 40 specially decorated taxis, and were presented with an award by the Malaysia Book of Records at the end of the challenge.
The challenge also saw celebrity participation from 8TV Quickie hosts Brandon Ho and Mark O’Dea, who were paired with Quickie fans Celest Chong and Natasha Tatiana, as well as actor Steve Yap.
Yap was invited to join the Shark Savers Couples Challenge as he was one of the ambassadors for the “I’m Finished with Fins” campaign.
