Check out the top five finalists in the Shiseido Professional Beauty Award.
IF YOU’RE in the hair business and want the world to see what you’re capable of, why not have your masterpiece captured by the best photographer in town?
In an effort to raise the professional level of the hair industry, Japanese hair care brand, Shiseido Professional, initiated a photo competition last year to encourage hairstylists from eight countries to show off their work.
The Shiseido Professional Beauty Innovator Award, the largest cross-cultural hair design photo competition of its kind, had top hairstyling talents from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, vying for the top prize.
One Grand Prix Winner will be picked from each country to join a special programme by Shiseido Academy of Beauty and Fashion in Japan to learn from professional trainers. Participants must clearly define the concept of their creations and capture the total look that encapsulates creativity in terms of hair, make-up, costume and photo mood.
More than 130 entries from across Malaysia were received and last September, a panel of judges comprising editors from renowned Malaysian beauty magazines and talented professionals, including Malaysian fashion designer, Khoon Hooi, narrowed it down to 11 semi-finalists, based on the photo entries (more than one entry was permitted) for the first round of judging.
The semi-finalists were Ringo Tai of e.ex Hair Salon & Academy Sdn Bhd, David Goh of D Hair Park, J Jong of e.ex Hair Salon & Academy Sdn Bhd, Edison Lim of E Avenue Hair Studio, Thum Wei Ming of A-Saloon Sdn Bhd, Kenneth Kwan of K’Neth Hair Studio, Lester Heng of A-Saloon Sdn Bhd, Leon Lim of Fansco Salon and Sky Sie of Sky Hair Salon.
The top five finalists will make their way to Japan on an all-expenses paid trip to Tokyo – courtesy of Mayflower Group – to attend the Shiseido Professional Beauty Congress.
A panel of grand jury comprising Shiseido Beauty Top Specialists; Masa Otake, principal of Shiseido Beauty Academy and vice-president of Shiseido Beauty Salon Co Ltd; renowned photographers and designers, will be poring over these five entries to choose the Grand Prix winner – who gets to drive away an all-new Nissan Almera 1.6 worth RM70,000, sponsored by Edaran Tan Chong.
The top five finalists were announced at the Shiseido Professional Beauty Innovator Award 2013 held in Kuala Lumpur recently, in the presence of Kuninori Ueno, managing director of Shiseido Malaysia, Datuk Rosie Tan, deputy director of Edaran Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd, and Samantha Vong, regional general manager of Shiseido Professional Malaysia and Singapore. Shiseido Professional hosted a well-choreographed evening with the theme Artistry of Inspiring Creativity, attended by 1,000 impeccably coiffured guests from the industry.
True to the DNA of the brand, the event was steeped in Japanese culture, from a traditional Japanese Kabuki dance performance to the vibrant Japanese music arrangement throughout the evening.
Guests were introduced to the 11 semi-finalists followed by presentations by the Shiseido Malaysia Beauty Creative Team, comprising Elvin Soh, Eric Koh and Lois Lee, all venerated names in the industry.
The legendary Masa Otake – principal of Shiseido Academy of Beauty and Fashion – later commanded the stage by feverishly transforming the hairdos of a succession of models in lightning speed, to unveil a series of looks from bouffant updos to glamorous long locks, embellished with sparkly hair bands, bows and feathers.
Earlier in the night, five individual awards were given out to Sky Sie for the Shiseido Best Make-up Award; Lester Heng, the Shiseido Popularity Award; Leon Lim and Sky Sie bagged the Estetica Asia Choice Award; J. Jong was chosen for the Nuyou Choice Award; and Kenneth Kwan won the Hair For You For Me Choice Award. The five finalists, who will also be in the running for a Nissan Almera 1.6, were Edison Lim, Kenneth Kwan, Ringo Tai, Leon Lim and Thum Wei Ming.
