MasterChef UK winner and Malaysian mum Ping Coombes talks exclusively to The Star Online about where she learned to cook like that.
Ipoh-born Catherine Chin Wan Ping, winner of MasterChef UK 2014, may be part British now, but her heart and stomach are one hundred percent Malaysian.
In our exclusive Skype interview with the self-taught cook – who tells us she expressly wanted to showcase Malaysian cuisine on the hit BBC One reality TV show – the 35-year-old mum reveals how her chicken rice almost poached her chances in the competition when the judges rated her dish as “too simple”. And that she didn’t even know how to boil an egg when she first got off the plane in England 14 years ago.
Watch our exclusive video interview above, where we ask Ping Coomes about working with temperamental eggs, dealing with her biggest critic, and – nasi lemak and wanton soup aside – what her signature dish really is. She also answers the question: What does your mother think of your cooking skills?
