Reading will stir the brain

I COULDN’T agree with Daphne Lee more on At least they’re reading (Oct 20). It reminded me about a brainstorming session we had with the late Tan Sri Noordin Sopiee at ISIS (Institute Of Strategic & International Studies) Malaysia in the early 1990s: he advocated making all sorts of reading material easily available to the citizens of the country.

When I raised a concern about sex-related materials, his answer was exactly as Daphne’s headline. Now, I’m facing issues with my children over their accessibility to worrying material via the digital world. So, would I prefer them having access to it via print or otherwise? Well, at least reading will stir the brain to think and digest words whatever form they come in.
