BY definition, an island is a piece of land surrounded by water. One could say it is a piece of substance, as in particulate matter, surrounded by fluidity.
In essence, that would hold true to our lives as well. We are all particulate matters of atoms pieced together and surrounded by a fluid shift of people, who enter our lives at various stages and phases.
