McDonald’s UK has launched a crowdsourced campaign inviting fans to create a sandwich recipe for the chance to have their burger served in restaurants nationwide.
Competitors can build their virtual sandwich by adding ingredients from a shortlist of items such chorizo sausage, pepperoni, nacho chips, brie, cheese and bacon sauce, guacamole, Piri Piri sauce, jalapenos and pineapple rings on the site My Burger.
One of the most popular submissions is made with a chili and paprika bun, maple-cured bacon, fried onions, smokey barbecue sauce, lettuce and goat cheese.
The 12 burgers that receive the most online votes will be put to a taste test by a panel of judges who will choose five winners, which will then be served at McDonald’s restaurants across the UK.
It’s not the first time McDonald’s has handed the reins of their test kitchens to the public.
When customers in Germany were challenged to create a new sandwich for the chain, they came up with sandwiches like the Pretzelnator, made with a pretzel bun, American and Italian cheese, ham, lettuce, onions and mayo, and a double-patty burger topped with a curry chili sauce and chorizo sausage.
Meanwhile, a McDonald’s outlet in California has been quietly testing a new concept that allows customers to custom build their own burgers using tablets, in a move that could serve as a sign of things to come.
This week, Burger King also tweaked its 40-year-old motto from “Have it your way” to “Be your way” to emphasise the concept of personalisation.
The competition closes on June 15. On June 29, the top burgers will be replicated at McDonald’s test kitchens and the five winners announced. – AFP Relaxnews
