What kids really think of their mums

To celebrate Mother's Day, ParenThots has approached some teenagers and pre-teens to talk about their mums and what makes them special.

Zoe Lamond, 13:

“When I was a child and Mum used to force me to brush my teeth and wrestle me in and out of the shower, I used to think, ‘When I’m a mum, I’m never going to do that to my child’. It’s not until now that I think, 'When I’m a mum, I hope that I can be as selfless as my Mum.’

“When my brother and I were babies, Mum grew more white hair and frown lines appeared on her young skin (which she claims has now been fixed by SKII) because she possibly had the hardest job in the world. Dad commuted overseas and was gone for most of the time. Mum had to look after a screaming, grumpy toddler (me) and a calm but hungry baby (my brother). Even on flights, Mum would have to walk me up and down the aisle to keep me calm.

“My family and I have lived all over the world, and we’ve never ‘accidentally’ left anything due to Mum’s extremely thorough finding and packing skills and her magic eye. And who can forget Mum’s cooking. Famous across Sydney, Mum cooks almost every night; finding new, delicious recipes for her family and friends to gobble up. She can cook anything she wants to, from the tedious lucky salad for Chinese New Year to a comforting vegetable soup when the flu season arrives.

“I don’t think of my Mum as a friend. Mothers and daughters have a special connection. Friends can come and go but my Mum will always be there; picking me up if my friends let me down.

“My mum and I do all sorts of activities together. She wakes ups early on Monday mornings to drive me to orchestra practice, wakes up early on Friday mornings to take me to netball training and drags herself out of bed on Saturday mornings to cheer me on at netball. She also takes me shopping and tells me honestly what she thinks of the clothes that I try on. The one thing that cements our bond is a shared love of food. The main activity that we do together is eating. It’s often joked that on holidays we eat, sleep, eat and shop.

“I enjoy time alone with my mum because she knows how to have a good time. We always have fun; even when we’re moving furniture it’s still a laugh. I also enjoy spending time alone with my mum because she always points out the good things sincerely and can cheer me up and make me forget about the stress that being a teenager can sometimes bring. My mum and I can sometimes be the same and sometimes be opposites. However, we still get along quite well; all we need is a lift to the mall or some gloves to weed the back garden.”
