Life after HIMYM: Where the show's stars will appear next

How I Met Your Mother finally ended its run yesterday after nine seasons.

After returning to the sitcom How I Met Your Mother season after season since 2005, the actors are now going their separate ways and looking towards new horizons.

Most of them are taking a break from TV to focus on film projects, and the success and popularity of HIMYM has opened up plenty of doors for them in Hollywood.

Neil Patrick Harris

It's gonna be legen...wait-for-it...dary!

Harris, who plays Barney Stinson, will be seen in two features this year. The star, who got his start playing a teenage doctor on Doogie Howser, M.D., will appear in Seth MacFarlane’s movie, A Million Ways To Die In The West. Slated for release in the US on May 30, the comedy also stars MacFarlane himself alongside Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron.

In October, he will shift into a very different genre in David Fincher’s Gone Girl. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike will also appear in this thriller adapted from the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name. In the meantime, Harris can be seen on the Broadway rock opera, Hedwig And The Angry Inch, in which he plays a transsexual rock star.

Jason Segel

Segel, better known to HIMYM fans as Marshall Eriksen, is already a familiar face on the silver screen. After his role on the cult series Freaks & Geeks, the actor went on to appear in Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppets and This Is 40 among other comedies.

After How I Met Your Mother, Segel will return to theatres alongside Cameron Diaz and Jack Black in Sex Tape, which is due for release in the US on July 25.

The actor will play author David Foster Wallace in his next project, The End Of The Tour, co-starring Jesse Eisenberg.

Alyson Hannigan

The only one of the show’s stars to remain on TV is Hannigan, who plays Lily Aldrin. Known for playing Willow in TV’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Michelle in the American Pie movie franchise, the actress could return once again to CBS in a potential series.

The 40-year-old actress co-stars with Tom Papa inMore Time With Family, a comedy pilot produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Outside of her role as Robin Scherbatsky, Smulders played S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers in 2012, and she reprises the role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is currently showing.

Smulders is expected to play the character once again in April 2015 in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. In another superhero role, the character voiced Wonder Woman in The Lego Movie, released in February.

Josh Radnor

Radnor, the man behind Ted Mosby, has not announced specific projects for the time being, although he is expected to return to the independent film scene. Like Friends star David Schwimmer, Radnor decided to make the transition from acting to directing.

The actor already has two features under his belt: Happythankyoumoreplease (2010) and Liberal Arts (2012), both of which were screened at the Sundance Film Festival.

The one where Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and the 'mother' (Cristin Milioti) almost met.

Cristin Milioti

Milioti, who joined the cast only recently in the role of the famous “mother”, can be seen next in the thriller, The Occupants. The actress, whose career has received a boost from her roles in HIMYM and The Wolf Of Wall Street, could land on ABC in the romantic comedy series A To Z. — AFP Relaxnews
