Sweetest sting: Acclaimed US indie group Warpaint, featuring (from left) drummer Stella Mozgawa, bassist Jennny Lee Lindberg, guitarist Theresa Wayman and singer Emily Kokal, all set to play in Petaling Jaya next month.
American indie pysch-pop group Warpaint geared up for local concert date.
YOU can always count on homegrown concert outfit Soundscape Records to curate the best live shows in town. It has booked hotly-tipped Los Angeles-based indie psych-pop group Warpaint as its first concert swing here this year. The all-female quartet is set to play a show at Bentley Music Auditorium, Petaling Jaya, in Selangor, on Feb 12.
Formed in 2004, Warpaint is Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Theresa Wayman (vocals/guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums).
Local fans have plenty of reasons to get behind Warpaint, with the girls’ meteoric rise over the last few years. After releasing the first EP Exquisite Corpse in 2008, the band signed with independent label Rough Trade Records in 2009, culminating in the release of its debut The Fool in October 2010 which earned it a BBC Sound of 2011 nomination.
It has taken nearly four years for Warpaint to return to the headlines. But wait no longer. The band’s self-titled second album, released earlier this week, has charmed the critics and fans alike. The new record, featuring 12 songs, surges with an alluring sensuality that’s unique to classic electronic and (British music label) 4AD dream pop records. Tunes like Love Is To Die and Biggy mark a new direction in Warpaint’s career, with a deeper atmospheric sense and sensuality in the equation.
U2 collaborator Flood’s textured production, with mixing help from Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, has given Warpaint a fresh creative edge. Across the new album, Warpaint weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that blur the line between psychedelia and intimacy.
The group will also contribute a cover of The Chauffeur to a forthcoming Duran Duran tribute album, Making Patterns Rhyme, nexth month. Warpaint plays Bentley Music Auditorium, 4th Floor, Wisma Bentley Music No. 3, Jalan PJU 7/2, Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, on Feb 12. Pre-sale tickets at RM118 are available at Rock Corner outlets in the Klang Valley. More info at www.soundscape-records.com.
