GOOD music, entertaining performances and a bevy of good-looking South Indian stars – come September, all eyes will be on Malaysia as the nation hosts the South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA).
The star-studded event, already in its third year, will be held on Sept 12 and 13 at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur. This is the first time the event is organised in South-East Asia, as it was previously held in the Middle East in the last two years.
“SIIMA is an excellent opportunity for Malaysia to strengthen its association with the South Indian film industry. We look forward to be part of its continued growth,” said Malaysia Major Events (MME) general manager Tony Nagamaiah during the launch last week.
MME announced that over 100 Indian movie stars will be present at the event, which is expected to bring in more than 5,000 international visitors. “We are confident that fans from our neighbouring countries will also take this opportunity to experience the excitement and glamour, and in fact, estimate tourist expenditure contribution of more than RM25mil,” added Tony.
Present at the launch were South Indian stars Suriya Sivakumar, Shriya Saran, Vidyut Jamwal and Rana Daggubati.
In conjuction with SIIMA, Suriya’s latest movie Anjaan also had its gala premiere in Petaling Jaya last Thursday attended by some of the cast.
“SIIMA has created a platform for South Indian films to reach its global audience and we are happy that SIIMA has partnered with Anjaan movie to host the premiere here. A special thank you to MME, for supporting this awards event and making it possible to position the Indian movie scene on a global platform,” said Suriya.
Actress Shriya added: “SIIMA is an amalgamation of all the different movies and actors. I feel that it is going to be bigger and better than before, and fans can truly expect lots of excitement and entertainment from us.”
The petite actress, known for her role opposite Rajnikanth in the 2007 movie Sivaji, also hinted that she may be performing during the event. Shriya added that she looks forward to the event and revealed another reason as to why she can’t wait for SIIMA.
“My birthday is on Sept 11, and it feels like all of the South Indian stars will be in Malaysia to celebrate my birthday,” said Shriya with a smile.
Besides Shriya, celebrities such as Tamanna, Anirudh, Devi Sri Prasad, Shiv Rajkumar, Lakshmi Menon and more are slated to attend the much anticipated event next month.
