'Penguins Of Madagascar' heads to the big screen

Dreamworks has unveiled the trailer for The Penguins Of Madagascar, the first spin-off movie on the popular Madagascar trilogy.

Among the most popular characters from the first Madagascar movie released in 2005, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private were given their own TV series, which aired between 2009 and 2010. Now, the penguins are headed to the silver screen for the next installment in their adventures.

Separated from their friends at the Central Park Zoo, the intrepid birds have been recruited by an undercover task force known as the North Wind. Their new commander, a wolf voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, leads them on a mission is to save the world from the evil Dr Octavius, voiced by John Malkovich.

The two stars follow in the footsteps of Chris Rock and Ben Stiller, who voiced Marty the zebra and Alex the lion in the three previous Madagascar movies.

The CGI animated feature is helmed by Eric Darnell, the director of the original Madagascar trilogy, and by Simon Smith (Bee Movie). Dreamworks is hoping to prolong the success of the Madagascar franchise with yet another box office hit; the last film in the trilogy, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, grossed US$746mil (RM2.38bil) worldwide.
