Hugh Jackman may continue playing Wolverine

The Australian actor, who is in Singapore to promote his latest film X-Men: Days Of Future Past, talks about the iconic Marvel character.

Hugh Jackman is the only actor to have played Wolverine in the X-Men film universe, a role he reprises for the seventh time in the latest installment, X-Men Days Of Future Past.

In an interview with him yesterday in Singapore – where he attended the movie’s South-East Asia premiere alongside his co-stars Peter Dinklage and Fan Bingbing – Jackman said there is no definite answer to how many more times he would or wouldn’t play the role.

He explained: “I don’t say yes definitely until I see the script. I love this character. If they go in this direction where they show a different side of his character and in a story that has something to say, I am sure I will be there. If it’s not like that, I probably won’t. You know what I mean.

“By the way, there will come a point when it’s not my decision ... I wouldn’t mind getting ahead of that,” he said with a laugh.

But the 45-year-old Australian – who shares no personality trait with the scowling and angry mutant, at all – is ever happy to welcome new members into the X-Men family.

Yesterday, it was reported that Channing Tatum will be playing another fan-favourite character, Gambit, in the next X-Men movie slated for 2017. This role was previously tackled by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009).

Jackman said: “I just heard this morning that Channing Tatum has signed on, and I think that’s great. I also think Taylor Kitsch did a great job, so I feel for him but at the same time I think Channing is fantastic. Maybe you’d have Wolverine in there going toe to toe with him.”

X-Men Days Of Future Past opens in cinemas nationwide on May 22.
