Bursa pauses for a breather after 3-day winning streak

KUALA LUMPUR: Investors chose to pause for breath today and take profits in the wake of the recent strong gains while the ringgit strengthened marginally against the US dollar.

At 5pm, the benchmark FBM KLCI closed down 3.19 points, or 0.21% at 1,552.40. The market traded within a range of 7.46 points between an intra-day high of 1,554.95 and a low of 1,547.49 during the session.

There were 386 gainers, 652 losers and 459 counters traded unchanged on the Bursa Malaysia. Turnover stood at 3.65 billion shares valued at RM2.71bil.

Among the losers on Bursa Malaysia, Allianz slid 18 sen to RM19.06, SHL Consolidated lost 18 sen to RM2.12, Ajinomoto fell 14 sen to RM17.20 and PETRONAS Gas declined 12 sen to RM18.02.

SAM Engineering rose 23 sen to RM4.18, Dutch Lady added 16 sen to RM23.86, Hong Leong Industries gained 16 sen to RM9.58 and Hume Cement Industries climbed 15 sen to RM3.09.

On the forex market, the ringgit was up 0.04% against the greenback to 4.7970. The local unit fell 0.02% against the Singapore dollar at 3.5689.

Elsewhere in the region, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.26%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 1.57%, South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.17% and China’s CSI 300 Index rose 1.35%.
