KUALA LUMPUR: PublicInvest research has maintained its underweight call on the telco sector following the launch of new high-speed broadband packages utilising Tenaga Nasional's fibre optic infrastructure in Jasin.
"TNB’s 3-month pilot project in Jasin was implemented through the RM1bn National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP) initiative announced in Budget 2019 and this has resulted in a successful rollout of new HSBB packages by Astro, Digi, Celcom and City Broadband," it said. Maxis is offering its current fibre plans.
The research house said that while the rollout of new packages is negative to Telekom Malaysia by introducing new competition into the fixed line broadband segment, the impact is expected to be immaterial as the connectivity is only restricted to 1,100 homes in Jasin.
