KUCHING: Sarawak will set up three regional trade offices, including in Singapore, next year as a liaison between the state's exporters and the international business community.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Singapore trade office would start operating on January 1 next year, and followed by another two trade offices in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei and Pontianak, West Kalimantan in Indonesia.
"So Sarawak will have our own 'trade diplomats' and our civil servants will be sent there to man these trade offices, which are meant for investors, manufacturing and tourism sectors," he said, adding that among the facilities provided were conference and meeting rooms.
Abang Johari said this when officiating at the two-day inaugural Sarawak International Business Exhibition and Conference (SIBEC) 2018, organised by the Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
Elaborating on the Singapore trade office, Abang Johari was confident that the state could meet the stringent international standards set by Singapore, especially in exporting its agricultural produce to the island nation.
On SIBEC, a new platform to help the local business community and entrepreneurs, he said input and ideas generated would be used by the state government to formulate policies in transforming the economy.
Themed "Digital Technology Drives Business", the conference also includes a sprawling exhibition of goods and services that is open to the public. - Bernama
