KLCI slightly higher on Digi, banks at midday


Genting slumped 15 sen to RM6.80 and erased 1.01 points while GentingM was down three sen to RM3.25 following the recent corporate news which were viewed as negative by investors.

KUALA LUMPUR: Some fund buying of Digi and selected banks helped underpin the FBM KLCI's gains at midday but the broader market was cautious.

At midday, the KLCI was up 1.87 points or 0.1% to 1,848.26. Turnover was 1.02 billion shares valued at RM615.50mil. There were 296 gainers, 450 losers and 383 counters unchanged.

The ringgit weakened 0.15% to the greenback at 3.9132.

Key Asian markets were mixed with Japan, South Korea and Singapore in the red but Hong Kong and China key indices were higher.

Reuters reported most Southeast Asian stock markets were subdued on Monday, in line with broader Asia, as investors waited for clues on the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy tightening pace. 

The Fed is likely to raise rates at its two-day meeting, which ends on March 21. The market focus is on Fed Chair Jerome Powell's commentary on March 22, which may provide hints on the number of rate increases in store for the rest of the year. 

At Bursa, Hong Leong Bank gained 12 sen to RM18.84, Public Bank rose eight sen to RM23.10, CIMB gained three sen to RM7.25 but Maybank fell two sen to RM10.30.

Digi gained six sen to RM4.60 and added 0.76 of a point to the KLCI, Axiata gained three sen to RM5.35, Maxis and Telekom fell one sen each to RM5.76 and RM5.59.

Crude palm oil for third month delivery rose RM9 to RM2,425 per tonne. United Plantations rose 36 sen to RM28.86, Batu Kawan up 10 sen to RM18.50, KL Kepong eight sen to RM7.56. IOI Corp was flat at RM4.58 while PPB Group was down two sen to RM18.52.

US light crude oil fell 37 cents to US$61.97 and Brent lost 40 sen to US$65.81. 

Petronas Gas fell 10 sen to RM17.90, Petronas Dagangan was unchanged at RM24.80 while Petronas Chemicals shed one sen to RM8.14. 

LC Titan rose 20 sen to RM6.39 while UMW rebounded 22 sen to RM6.28 following its RM1.1bil right issue.

Brahims jumped 14.5 sen to 47.5 sen. For the financial year ended Dec 31, 2017, Brahim’s net loss narrowed to RM6.93mil compared with RM74.95mil a year ago. 

Consumer stocks topped the losers list again with Nestle down RM1.70 to RM129.30, Heineken lost 60 sen to RM20.80, Dutch Lady 50 sen to RM67, BAT 38 sen lower at RM27.30, Carlsberg 26 sen down to RM18.78 and Ajinomoto fell 24 sen RM22.22.
