ICPT rebate on electricity seen on TNB bill not funded by taxpayers, says EC

EC acting CEO Azhar Omar

PUTRAJAYA: The imbalance cost pass through (ICPT) rebate that is seen in the electricity bill is not funded by taxpayers money, said the Energy Commission (EC).

The EC clarified that the latest rebate that had been announced on Boxing Day will be funded by the Electricity Industry Fund (EIF).

“The EIF is funded from (among others) the savings from the electricity generation costs from the projected amount during the Regulatory Period 1 (2015-2017),” acting CEO of the EC Azhar Omar said during a press briefing today.

In a statement on Boxing Day, TNB said the government has agreed to provide RM929.37mil for the ICPT subsidy and rebate of 1.80sen/kWh for the period of Jan 1 to June 30, 2018.

“This includes 0.28 sen/kWh of surcharge from additional cost of generation and 1.52 sen/kWh to continue the current Imbalance Cost Past Through (ICPT) rebate for the electricity customers,” said the national power utility company.
