KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Aviation Commission’s (Mavcom) first industry report projects that the country’s air passenger traffic growth this year will be ahead of last year’s.
Its chief operating officer Azmir Zain (pic) said the first industry report, known as Waypoint, showed that the average air passenger traffic was predicted to be between 98.3 million and 99.2 million this year.
“This is due to higher demand for air travel as average fares have shrunk over the past few years, where fares for international routes declined more than that of domestic routes.
“At the same time, airlines in Malaysia are expected to increase their capacity by 14.3% this year,” he told reporters in Kota Kinabalu on Thursday.
Mavcom’s first industry report or Waypoint provides an outlook of the Malaysian aviation industry, along with commentaries on current issues affecting the industry.
“As the commission’s first Industry report, a summary on the background of the review of the aviation industry condition from 2010 to 2016 was featured in Waypoint.
‘“Waypoint is part of our quest to give a comprehensive overview and understanding of the Malaysian aviation industry and we believe this report will promote a stronger growth in this sector,” he said.
Azmir said despite a rosy picture painted by Waypoint that the country’s aviation industry was heading in a positive direction, the operating environment was expected to continue to be challenging.
“Nevetherless, there are still opportunities in this sector and we hope that they will encourage industry players to explore ways to unleash its potential.
“Most importantly, we believe that there are opportunities to collaborate with other industries such as tourism which is set to lead the overall growth of our economy,” he said. - Bernama
