SHAH ALAM: The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) is targeting a 10%-30% increase in total export revenue from Malaysian mid-tier companies (MTCs) this year, given their current positive performances.

Deputy Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong said last year, the export revenue for the total of 152 MTCs were RM6.82bil, up 10.41% from RM6.18bil in 2015.

“In the first year of the establishment of the Mid-Tier Development Programme in 2014, the total export revenue for the companies under the programme stood at RM4.15bil. Since then, their exports have been increasing tremendously year-on-year.

“They managed to keep the exports on the upward momentum despite the current uncertain economic condition,” he told reporters after the “turun padang” programme organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp in Shah Alam on Monday.

For this year, Chua said, a total of 21 MTCs from various sectors had been recruited.

He said currently the companies were being consulted and evaluated of the suitable export markets to enter based on the business models.

“These companies will undergo the nine-month training and evaluation activities under the MTC programme before they are included into the existing 152 MTCs,” he said.

The MTC programme aims at enhancing the companies’ exports which currently achieved an annual export revenue of between RM20mil and RM500mil for services companies and between RM50mil and RM500mil for manufacturing companies.

Meanwhile, Burhanudin Md Radzi, managing director of Les’ Copaque Production Sdn Bhd which produces the Upin & Ipin animated series, said the development of the company’s theme park in China had entered the final phase.

“We are currently looking to attract the investment (into the project) as the gross development value for the project is quite big, about US$10bil. There are many companies that are eager to invest in the project, including the government-linked companies in China.

“The theme park will be an interactive theme park. The contents of the park will done here (Les’ Copaque) so the company needs to increase the number of our content makers by about 400. If everything materialises (in time), hopefully we will sign the memorandum of agreement with them (China counterpart) in October,” he said. - Bernama
