KUALA LUMPUR: Agrobank has opened its first corporate banking centre, located in Kuching, in a bid to cater to the needs of its diverse clients, especially from corporate and government agencies that focus on agri-businesses activities.

Its chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Zabidi Zainal said in a statement that the centre would focus on Sarawak and Sabah in view of the huge potential and opportunities for the agriculture-based industry in both states.

“Sarawak and Sabah has huge potential in agri-businesses due to their abundance of natural resources. Having a dedicated centre for corporate financing shows that these two states have high demand for corporate financing facilities in the agriculture sector,” he said.

“Indirectly, this decision also indicates that agricultural activities are not just selfsustaining and small-scale activities, but also have potential for major commercial businesses such as oil palm cultivation, fertiliser production and many more.”

Previously corporate banking matters were centralised at headquarters level in Kuala Lumpur.

However, with the establishment of new Agrobank Corporate Banking Centre, local customers will have easier and quicker access to obtain information and deliver their corporate financing applications.

Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who officiated at the launching ceremony on Friday, said the opening of Agrobank’s first corporate banking centre was very much welcomed by the state as it would support the state’s existing transformation plan for agriculture.

Agrobank is a Government-owned bank under the purview of the Minister of Finance Inc. The full-fledged Islamic bank operates 188 branches.
