KUALA LUMPUR: GHL Systems Bhd has partnered AliPay to offer Malaysian in-store merchants and online merchants an alternative payment method.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Monday, the payment services provider said Malaysia was the second Asean country where it had teamed up with AliPay, one of the largest global mobile and online payment platforms with over 400 million users.

AliPay is China’s leading third-party online payment solution, owned by the Alibaba Group.

GHL said the service roll-out would start with the in-store merchants before the end of the month and would eventually be extended to e-commerce merchants.

Its chief executive officer, Danny Leong, said the company had started its partnership with AliPay in 2016 in Thailand, which allowed both sides to familiarise themselves with the operational methodology and iron out initial teething issues.

“This will enable a smooth roll out of ‘AliPay Malaysian’, and we’re looking forward to expand our services to the region as AliPays Asean partner,” he said.

GHL said to-date, GHL Thailand has enabled over 600 merchant acceptance points with notable chain stores in the hotel, retail and food and beverages space.

“GHL Thailand has extended the AliPay payment offering to e-commerce merchants under eGHL, the group’s online payment gateway,” it said.

In 2016, Malaysia had received 26.8 million tourists, including 2.1 million tourists from China, contributing close to RM82.1bil in revenues, it said.

“The Chinese tourists are expected to increase this year and the payment method bodes well for Malaysian merchants as they generally carry the AliPay mobile wallet,” it said. - Bernama
