THE UK’s love hate relationship with the European Union can be traced back to the 1950’s. The UK was not a signatory to the 1957 Treaty of Rome which created the European Economic Community (EEC). Further applications were made to join the organisation in 1963 and 1967 but once again vetoed by France.
A third application was made in 1973 when the UK was administered by the Conservatives, which was successful, as the UK joined the “Common Market”.
